A University of Missouri Extension Program

Join us to build the strength you need to enjoy good health as you age. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) is an eight-week exercise program that incorporates the latest research to help you develop the fitness, flexibility and balance you need to live independently longer.

In hour-long courses held twice a week, trained instructors will lead you through a warmup, easy-to-learn strength exercises and a cool-down. SSSH exercises are safe and effective, and we’ll provide weights for your use on-site. No need to wear special clothes—just comfortable, loose-fitting pants and shirt, along with sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes. You’ll find courses in familiar, nearby venues, such as senior centers or church halls.

After you’ve completed the course, we’ll provide you with a guide you can use to continue strength training in the comfort of your home.

Agriculture and farmers' markets

  • Boone County Farmers Market offers produce, eggs, meats, and baked goods April through October. See website for details.
  • Columbia Farmers Market offers year-round produce, eggs, meats, and baked goods. See website for locations as they change based on the time of year.
  • DanJo Farms produces fresh baked bread, meats, herbs, vegetables, eggs, berries, and fruits. This farm is located in Ashland, MO.
  • Happy Hollow Farm produces certified organic vegetables, herbs, and eggs--and at times, organic meat and canned goods--through summer and winter CSA Memberships (Community Supported Agriculture) and sells at the Columbia Farmer’s Market.
  • The Root Cellar in Columbia, MO, offers three weekly local food subscription programs to make healthy eating convenient and affordable. Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter subscriptions are available to Mid-Missourians. Delivery is available on campus at select locations.   • Missouri Farmers' Market Directory - Missouri is home to more than 140 farmers' markets located in communities across the state providing a rich variety of homegrown fruits and vegetables as well as locally produced goods such as dairy, eggs, and meats. Nutritional counseling

University of Missouri employees that have medical insurance through the university are eligible to receive outpatient nutrition counseling as a covered health benefit for the following diagnoses: diabetes, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidemia, and/or obesity (Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or greater). Employees can request a dietitian referral from their physician or for more information contact one of MUHC's registered dietitians.

Plan your meals

The following websites and smartphone apps can help you plan your meals, recipes, and shopping lists so that you can have the ingredients you need, prepare meals that are delicious, eat the things you love at work and at home.  

Pepperplate 
This is a Web and app-based tool for your smartphones and tablets that help you store recipes and plan meals for the week. It generates a shopping list based on your weekly meal plan so that you have everything you need when you come home from the store.  

Paprika
Similar to Pepperplate, this is an app-based tool  (but it is not available as a website). It allows you to plan meals and create grocery lists from the meals you have set for the week.

Live and Work Well is an affiliate of United Behavioral Health and the administrator of mental health insurance through university medical insurance plans. You can find in-network mental health providers at UHC.com. MU Employee Assistance Program is a confidential, professional service provided to all employees, their families, retirees and organizational work units. The EAP provides a variety of services to help employees influenced by a range of personal concerns, including emotional distress, family concerns, alcohol/substance abuse, legal problems, occupational health, and more. Ergonomics - The ACT Center offers tips on how to improve your work station and job site to meet your physical needs. Ergonomics covers all aspects of a job, from physical stress placed on joints and muscles to environmental factors that affect hearing, vision, and general comfort and health. Ergonomic assessments are available by appointment.

Tobacco Cessation - Access information about tobacco cessation services at the Universeity Wellness Resource Center.

Sinclair@Home - Sinclair@Home combines registered nurse care coordination and in‐home sensor technology to keep you safe and independent at home. The RN care coordinator develops an independent living plan to help you meet your health and wellness goals and maintain your independence. Staff Health provides Covid-19 boosters, tetanus and hepatitis B vaccinations as well as provides seasonal Influenza vaccinations annually. They also complete immunization requirements for incoming employees, observers, and volunteers. The office provides basic health counseling, TB testing as needed, and counseling for TB-positive patients. Located in MC-11 at the University of Missouri Hospital. Virtual Private Network
A virtual private network (VPN) is a private network that connects remote sites or users together using virtual connections routed through the Internet. VPNs add a layer of security by encoding the data one computer is sending to another into a form that only the other computer will be able to decode. Using this, you will be able to access your work desktop and campus resources from your home computer as long as your work computer is turned on. Make sure that the data that you are accessing from home is not confidential.
