Joining the University of Missouri-St. Louis community in August of 2011, Lauren Schmidt is an assistant professor of Spanish in the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Languages. Her areas of research include Spanish phonology, second language acquisition, and linguistic variation. Currently, she is investigating how second language learners acquire and use dialectally and socially variable sounds, as well as how native (monolingual) speakers perceive and process dialectal sounds that are not part of their own local speech variety. At the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Schmidt oversees the linguistics research and teaching laboratory, and teaches courses in Spanish Linguistics, including Spanish Phonology, Advanced Spanish Grammar, Second Language Acquisition of Spanish, and Spanish Sociolinguistics.
