Chief of Staff Search - University of Missouri System

The President of the University of Missouri system is seeking a dynamic and accomplished person to serve as his Chief of Staff, providing leadership and coordination for the activities of the Office of the President and carrying out key strategic and academic priorities critical to the mission of the University of Missouri System and the state. The Chief of Staff is responsible for representing and advising the President in various matters across the University, including the overall management of the President’s office, liaison to the Board of Curators, as well as overseeing major projects and initiatives of the four-campus academic enterprise.

This highly visible leadership role requires an individual with outstanding interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, tact and integrity. They must be a highly capable communicator, a servant-leader dedicated to the mission of public higher education for the state, region, and beyond, and eager to help transform the university into a 21 st century public institution.

The successful candidate must be highly organized and detail-oriented, thrive within a complex environment, be capable of carrying fast-paced change forward, all while simultaneously keeping the President’s office focused on the University’s mission and strategic initiatives. The successful candidate will be assertive and confident yet approachable and respectful, with a proven track record in building collaborative relationships across organizational lines and with key constituencies both inside and outside of the institution. Above all, this person must demonstrate the highest ethics and confidentiality inherent in such a position.

The Chief of Staff will be engaged in key activities such as:

  • Serving on the President’s leadership team and advising the President and other university leaders on major system-wide, campus and external issues.
  • Managing major projects and initiatives, serving on committees and responding to internal and external concerns and constituents.
  • Convening the administrative and academic leaders of the four-campus system and health enterprise to carry forward key strategic and operational initiatives of the university.
  • Managing and coordinating the government relations function of the University of Missouri System.
  • Advising senior staff charged with joint communications and marketing to ensure that public messaging and internal operations are coordinated, focused and consistent.
  • Communicating broadly the strengths and value the UM System provides to the employees of the system, citizens of the state and beyond.
  • Engaging public officials and citizens across the state of Missouri and beyond.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must have an undergraduate degree.
  • Five years of experience implementing major program initiatives.
  • Experience supervising key administrative staff in complex organizations in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Avanced degree, from an accredited institution.
  • Analyze and prioritize institutional challenges, and advise the President accordingly.
  • Work in a collegial manner, resolve conflicts and issues, and maintain effective relationships with a variety of persons, internal and external to the organization.
  • Communicate broadly, effectively and efficiently, both orally and in writing.
  • Plan, develop and implement complex strategic goals and program initiatives that require the effective management of resources.
  • Knowledge of the University’s mission, regulations, processes, organizational structure, culture and complex relationships with multiple constituents.
  • Knowledge of the social, economic, political and educational climate of Missouri.
