HR-226 Separation Payments

Summary

Separation payments are described for situations concerning death or termination of employment.

Teaching and Research

Upon the death or termination of employment for any cause of a Teaching & Research staff member on a 9-month service basis appointment, payment shall be made for the difference between the salary paid prior to death or termination and full salary earned to the date of death or termination. Earned salary shall be computed on the basis of the number of teaching days in the employment period.

Upon the death or termination of employment for any cause of a Teaching & Research staff member on a 12-month service basis appointment, payment shall be made for the difference between the amount of salary earned at the date of death or termination and the amount received prior to death or termination. Earned salary shall be computed on the basis that total salary is earned in 12 months.

Administrative Service and Support

Upon the death or termination of employment for any cause of an Administrative, Service & Support staff member, payment shall be made for the difference between the salary for the period employed and the amount received prior to death or termination plus any earned vacation time.

Upon the death or termination of employment for any cause of a staff member not covered by any of the above, payment shall be made for the prorata part of the fixed compensation earned to the date of death or termination. In such instances, earned salary shall be computed on the basis of working days as applicable.

Refund from UM Retirement, Disability and Death Benefit Plan:

Upon death or termination of employment, payment will be made for a refund of contributions made by the employee to the UM Retirement, Disability and Death Benefit Plan if vested status has not been attained.
