Retiree benefits overview

_____________________________________

Eligibility*

Employees who retire on or after January 1, 2018, are eligible for retiree insurance benefits if they: were employed in a UM System benefit-eligible position on December 31, 2017; reached at least five years of vesting service as of December 31, 2017; and reach at least 60 years old by retirement date; and accrue at least 20 years of creditable service to the UM System by their retirement date.

The retiree insurance benefits employees are eligible for depend upon the Access Category in which they were placed as of December 31, 2017. For more information about access categories, review the eligibility chart (PDF 110KB) or contact the HR Service Center to request a review of your service and access category determination.

*Special rules apply in the case of breaks in service or termination after 12/31/17. Refer to the Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) for the retiree insurance plans for more information.

Insurance Options

The University is committed to honoring and valuing the contributions of all faculty and staff--even after they are no longer actively employed with the UM System. UM retiree health insurance eligibility and subsidy criteria depend on several factors. For more information, review the eligibility section.

We offer several insurance options to our eligible retirees and their covered dependents. Please note, your Medicare eligibility determines your eligibility for some plans--meaning you are eligible for the insurance only if you are eligible for Medicare (65+) or not yet Medicare-eligible (pre-65).
