The University of Missouri System is governed by the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri, the constitutionally established governing body of Missouri’s public research university system, offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral education.
Pursuant to RSMo 172.030, the Board of Curators has constitutional authority to oversee the operation of the four-campus University of Missouri System. This authority includes setting tuition and fees, determining admissions requirements, granting degrees, approving contracts and property transactions, issuing bonds and appointing and evaluating the President of the University.
The Board consists of nine voting Curators appointed by the Governor of Missouri, with the advice and consent of the Missouri Senate, and one non-voting student representative. Curators serve six-year terms, with the terms of three Curators expiring every two years.
At least one, and no more than two, Curators are appointed from each congressional district, and no more than five voting members may belong to the same political party. All Curators must be citizens of the United States and residents of the State of Missouri.
The Role of the Board of Curators
In carrying out its responsibilities, the Board of Curators drives the vision of the University of Missouri System to advance opportunities for success and well-being for Missouri, the nation, and the world through transformative teaching, research, innovation and engagement.
As stewards of a land-grant institution, the Board supports the University’s mission to achieve excellence in the discovery, dissemination, preservation and application of knowledge.

Curators receive no compensation for their service but are reimbursed for actual and necessary expenses incurred while conducting official Board business.
