House Agriculture Committee Announces Farm Bill Portal for Members of Congress
House Agriculture Committee – May 8, 2023
The House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member David Scott (GA-13) and Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15) launched an online portal to solicit Farm Bill feedback from Members of the House of Representatives, regardless of membership on the House Committee on Agriculture. The portal is open to Member Offices and receiving comments until June 9, 2023. Stakeholders and private citizens can submit feedback here.

Farm Bill Listening Session Coming to Missouri
Brownfield News – May 9, 2023
A farm bill listening session is scheduled for Missouri later this summer. Congressman Mark Alford from western Missouri, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, tells Brownfield the event will take place on August 14 at the Missouri State Fair.

Biden, Agriculture Committee Leaders to Discuss Farm Bill Goals

The top four farm bill writers and President Joe Biden will meet Thursday to discuss the legislation amid concerns that an impasse in debt ceiling negotiations between the White House and House Republicans could slow progress on the wide-ranging policy bill for agriculture.

House Armed Services Committee (HASC), Senate Committee on Armed Services (SCAS) announce Delay on FY24 NDAA Markups
The Association of American Universities – May 10, 2023
Both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees are postponing markups for the FY24 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 2670). HASC had previously announced that it would hold markups during the month of May. According to Politico, SASC also delayed its plans due to the debt-limit standoff. HASC Ranking Member Adam Smith (D-WA) released a statement on the postponement, urging Republicans to raise the debt ceiling and to “get back to the regular order of business and markup the defense bill in committee.”

DoD Releases National Defense Science and Technology Strategy
U.S. Department of Defense – May 9, 2023
The Department of Defense released the National Defense Science and Technology Strategy, or NDSTS, Tuesday. Guided by the National Defense Strategy, the NDSTS articulates the science and technology priorities, goals, and investments of the Department and makes recommendations on the future of the defense research and engineering enterprise.

The 2023 Innovation Policy workshop recently convened experts across government, academic, and private sectors to exchange ideas for leveraging opportunities embedded in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act for national and regional scale growth.

House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology - May 10, 2023
The Joint Energy and Investigations & Oversight Subcommittee held a hearing Wednesday which examined the status of the Department of Energy (DOE)’s implementation of recently passed R&D legislation, including the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and the CHIPS and Science Act. This hearing also focused on DOE’s recent reorganization, exploring its impact on the implementation of these laws and on DOE’s civilian research, development, demonstration, and commercial application programs in general.

NSF invests more than $43 million in NSF Regional Innovation Engines Development Awards

The U.S. National Science Foundation announced the first-ever NSF Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, program awards to 44 unique teams spanning universities, nonprofits, businesses, and other organizations across the U.S. states and territories. Each awardee team will receive up to $1 million for two years. The NSF Engines program is anticipated to be transformational for the nation, ensuring the U.S. remains in the vanguard of competitiveness for decades to come.

Davids Announces Two Regional Universities Receive Prestigious Technological Innovation Award

Biden-Harris Administration Launches First Tech Hubs Funding Opportunity

he Biden-Harris administration, through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), today launched the Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs) competition. This program will create tech hubs in regions across the country by bringing together industry, higher education institutions, state and local governments, economic development organizations, and labor and workforce partners to supercharge ecosystems of innovation for technologies that are essential to our economic and national security.
