With cancer, diabetes and heart disease among the leading causes of disability and death in the United States, imagine a long-term, in-home monitoring solution that could detect these chronic diseases early and lead to timely interventions. Zheng Yan and a team of researchers at the University of Missouri may have a solution. They have created an ultrasoft “skin-like” material — that’s both breathable and stretchable — for use in the development of an on-skin, wearable bioelectronic device capable of simultaneously tracking multiple vital signs such as blood pressure, electrical heart activity and skin hydration.

Dr. Michael Moats, chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T, appeared before a U.S. House of Representatives panel Thursday (Feb. 9, 2023) to provide expert testimony on critical minerals production in the United States and the impact of foreign production of these minerals to the U.S.

Missouri S&T ranks among the nation’s top universities for graduates’ economic success, according to the latest rankings from the college guide website DegreeChoices. According to this ranking, Missouri S&T is first in the state of Missouri and 10th nationwide among public universities. Missouri S&T ranks 18th in the nation overall.

UMSL campus photoUniversity of Missouri-Saint Louis

University of Missouri–St. Louis Chancellor Kristin Sobolik trumpeted the university’s role as a driver of workforce development and champion of equitable economic growth while appearing as a featured guest on Winning STL, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s video series featuring interviews with regional business and community leaders. They discussed how UMSL has aligned its efforts with the STL 2030 Jobs Plan, most notably with its leadership.

Planning is underway for a Center of Excellence in indoor farming that would be housed on the campus of the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The Yield Lab Institute is leading the efforts to develop the center, expected to reside on the northern part of the UMSL campus, not far from Express Scripts and Florissant Road. It is intended to have a dual focus on innovation, sharing knowledge, commercialization and best practices for indoor agriculture while also working to enhance food equity and access.
