Budgets are not a sexy issue, but they are a substantive one. The amount of funding our universities receive from the state legislature directly impacts the cost of your education. With state funding for higher education down nationwide, this is not a hypothetical problem, but one that is costing you and your family money right now.
ASUM understands this, and so we train our interns on the ins-and-outs of the UM System State Appropriations Request. We teach them about the different line items, what they mean, and how they translate into real changes for us. We visit aging campus facilities that need renovating and upgrading but that we simply don’t have the money for. And then we take this knowledge and experience to lawmakers so that they understand, from a human instead of a business perspective, the impact of their funding decision.
