Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Announcement

Members of the UM System, MU and MU Health Care communities:

Today, we are pleased to announce that Richard J. Barohn has been appointed Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs for MU. Dr. Barohn is currently vice chancellor for research, president of the Research Institute and director of Frontiers: University of Kansas Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

He is a nationally recognized leader of translational medicine, moving discoveries from the bench to the bedside and to the community. In this role, Dr. Barohn will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that affirms MU Health Care as one of the preeminent health care systems in the Midwest and a leader in patient care. Partnering with academic and hospital leaders, faculty, and staff, Dr. Barohn will work to advance the missions of an integrated, sophisticated academic health science center committed to the highest quality clinical care.

Dr. Barohn’s efforts will help lead MU Health Care and Missouri’s flagship, land-grant AAU research university as they meet their critical missions of education, research and advanced care for the state of Missouri. In concert with MU’s NextGen Precision Health Institute — which will celebrate its topping-off on April 27 — and the systemwide NextGen Precision Health Initiative, this work will position Missouri as a global leader in precision health advances and world-class research.

Dr. Barohn is no stranger to our community, having received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. We are proud to welcome him back to Missouri, and we are confident that his track record of leadership and commitment to health care progress through research bodes well for his tenure here. We would also like to thank MU Provost Latha Ramchand, chair of the search committee; the UM System executive recruiting team; and search firm Isaacson, Miller, for making this search a resounding success. The Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs reports to both the president of the UM System and the chancellor at MU, overseeing MU Health Care and the School of Medicine. The provost provides leadership to all schools, colleges and divisions.

This year is shaping up to be a memorable one for the advancement of health care and research in Missouri, and we are proud to name Dr. Barohn as the newest addition to those efforts.

Sincerely,

Mun Y. Choi, Ph.D.
UM System President

Alexander N. Cartwright, Ph.D.
MU Chancellor
