Leadership updates

Dear colleagues,

I’m pleased to share two important leadership announcements with you.

After a national search, Michelle Piranio has been selected as the associate vice president and chief audit and compliance officer. Michelle brings 28 years of internal audit and compliance experience in health care and higher education settings. She most recently served as the interim chief audit executive and played a critical role in establishing an Internal Audit and Consulting Services team that serves the four campuses and Health System including increasing audit coverage, establishing a new risk assessment process and redesigning the UM System Integrity and Accountability Hotline. Prior to joining UM Internal Audit and Consulting Services, Michelle served as the Director of Compliance Effectiveness for MU Health.

Michelle will continue to work closely with many stakeholders across the four universities and MU Health, including campus and system leadership along with the staff in the following areas diversity, equity and inclusion, human resources, finance, legal and compliance. One of her first priorities will to be working with these groups to recruit an Executive Director of Compliance.

Additionally, MU Chancellor Cartwright and I are pleased to announce Beth Chancellor, senior associate dean for IT at the School of Medicine, as the interim UM System vice president for information technology as well as the MU chief information officer. Her appointment was effective Sept. 1, upon Gary Allen’s retirement. We will launch a national search for this position later this year.

Beth will provide oversight of the information technology infrastructure for MU, the system and UM universities, MU Health and Extension programs. In addition, she has responsibilities within the statewide Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet), a member-driven consortium serving Missouri's K-12 schools, colleges and universities, public libraries, state and local government, teaching hospitals and clinics and other affiliate organizations.

Among her many accomplishments, she has led the development of online dashboards and scorecards to track progress toward strategic goals; implemented technology infrastructure to host research applications; and improved operational efficiency through shared technology standards and common support processes.

Please join me in welcoming Beth and Michelle to their new roles and thanking them for their continued service to the UM System.

Sincerely,

Mun Y. Choi
UM System President
