University of Missouri System administrator selected as an American Chemical Society Fellow

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Hank Foley, executive vice president for Academic Affairs for the University of Missouri System and senior vice chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies for the University of Missouri-Columbia, was recently named as a Fellow of the Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Division at the American Chemical Society (ACS). Created by the American Chemical Society Board of Directors, the ASC Fellows Program was designed to recognize members of ACS for their outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession, and the Society.

“Hank’s continued leadership and proven accolades in academia continue to speak to the level of work we aspire to at the university,” UM System President Tim Wolfe said. “This latest recognition by Hank’s colleagues makes us proud to have him leading research efforts at the system, and now at our flagship campus.”

Foley will be presented with his award at the Spring 2015 ACS National Meeting. In addition, a research symposium will be held in his honor, organized by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor of Chemical Engineering Michael Strano, Ph.D., one of Foley’s former students.

"Dr. Foley is highly deserving of the recognition afforded by the ACS Fellowship, and I congratulate him,” Strano said.  “A physical chemist by training, Hank approaches problems from a multidisciplinary perspective, drawing upon his expertise in chemical catalysis, materials science and engineering that has proven to be highly effective."

Foley joined the UM System in August 2013 and, most recently, was named as the chief leader for MU’s research operation in March. As executive vice president of Academic Affairs, his primary responsibilities include working with a variety of campus leaders including chancellors, provosts and chief research and economic development officers in leading the system’s strategic planning efforts; providing systemwide leadership in academic programs; promoting economic development; advancing research collaborations and enhancing funding, and; leading the institutional research, student access and success, academic program review and eLearning functions of the system. In MU’s Office of Research, Foley oversees the Division of Sponsored Programs, nine research centers, the MU Technology Management and Industry Relations Program, and the Office of Animal Research.

Prior to his appointment as system vice president, Foley served as vice president for research and dean of the graduate school at Pennsylvania State University. He also was president of the Penn State Research Foundation and the Penn State Research Park Management Corporation. In his tenure at Penn State, Foley served in the roles of named chair, department head, associate vice president for research and director of strategic initiatives, and dean of the College of Information Sciences and Technology. Prior to his tenure at Penn State, he served on the chemical engineering faculty at the University of Delaware for 14 years. A specialist in catalysis, Foley has written over 150 scientific papers and holds 15 patents with his students.
