Access Category D refers to benefit-eligible faculty and staff members who, by January 1, 2018, have less than five years of service. The changes to retiree insurance, as approved by the board of curators, mean that employees in Access Category D will not be eligible for UM insurance upon retirement. The insurance available to you during your employment is stable and well-funded, and so is your pension. Employees in this category will purchase retiree insurance from a vendor unaffiliated with the university.
The university's limited resources will be focused on a total rewards package that provides what employees have identified as most important: pay, access to insurance during employment, and retirement savings. Options and resources for assistance in obtaining insurance after retirement continue to improve. The university will continue to provide resources and support to assist you in saving for retirement and in navigating available insurance options as you approach retirement.

Footnote:
"Years of service" includes the number of creditable years worked for the UM System; for the purposes of eligibility, partial years are not counted (e.g., 19.9 years of service = 19). If you are unsure of your service credit, the best way to obtain an estimate is by completing the UM Retirement Calculator. Log in to myHR. Find the Retirement Calculator under the myTotal Rewards menu option on the left-hand side of your screen. Get step-by-step help at umurl.us/retcalc.
