University of Missouri President Elson S. Floyd to Seek Input from Missourians about Tuition

University of Missouri President Elson S. Floyd wants to talk to you about tuition. Starting next week, President Floyd begins a series of visits across the state to determine how Missourians feel about guaranteeing tuition rates for incoming freshmen. For specific locations and dates, please see the attached event schedule. Subsequent public releases will be made pending location or date changes.

President Floyd will also make a brief presentation at the 7 a.m., Friday, Aug. 5, 2005 South Columbia Rotary meeting at the Country Club of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. to describe the guaranteed tuition concept.

The change to be discussed would be a guaranteed tuition rate for incoming University of Missouri undergraduate students that would not increase for four years or the approved duration of their programs. Undergraduate students already enrolled at the University would have a guaranteed rate for four, three or two years, depending on remaining program duration.

"Let me emphasize that the University is simply examining the guaranteed tuition approach," President Floyd said, noting that no decision has been made to pursue the concept. "The purpose of my visits to Missouri communities is to discuss the pros and cons involved and listen to what you have to say. The feedback that I receive at these public forums will weigh heavily in any decisions the University ultimately makes."

Possible benefits to guaranteed tuition rates could include allowing students and their families to budget with greater confidence over a four-year period and encouraging timely graduation.
