UM System re-names Leadership Development Program after former President Manuel T. Pacheco

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri System announced today the renaming of the Leadership Development Program (LDP) to the Dr. Manuel T. Pacheco Leadership Development Program. Pacheco served as UM System President from 1997-2002.

“Manuel Pacheco knew the importance of investing in our people—especially faculty leaders—to help them be successful as they advanced in their careers,” UM System Interim President Michael Middleton said. “We are grateful for Manuel’s vision to introduce such a program during his tenure, which was a novel concept in higher education at the time.”

The Leadership Development Program, launched in 2000, is a prestigious program that provides faculty leaders with skills to guide and support faculty, lead strategic planning for academic programs, work collaboratively with others to address leadership concerns and build commitment toward academic excellence.

For 16 years, the LDP has supported an annual cohort of 30 to 35 academic department chairs, directors, and assistant deans who demonstrate leadership potential at the University of Missouri.  The goal of the program has been to develop academic leaders who will guide the University into the future. The LDP program, one of the first of its kind in the country, has persisted even during tough financial times in higher education because of the commitment to the importance of faculty leadership. To date, the program has served nearly 400 academic leaders across the four UM System campuses.

In April, the UM System renamed the Administrative Leadership Development Program (ALDP) to the Elson S. Floyd Administrative Leadership Development Program to honor the late former UM System President.
