I will be younger than 59½ when I retire; can I continue to work for the university after retirement?

If you will be under age 59½ on the date of your retirement, certain criteria must be met in order to be reemployed with the university.

Specifically, you cannot be rehired pursuant to a discussion, understanding, or agreement (written or oral) that occurred prior to termination from employment or commencement of the retirement benefit. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires that a retiree must have a bona fide retirement, if under the age of 59½, prior to being rehired by the same employer.

Rehire requirements can be viewed in the “In Special Cases” section of the applicable retirement plan Summary Plan Description (SPD).
